Women's perspectives on Chrolli / Ollian
Apr 8 2008, 12:06 AM EDT Hello everyone! I've noticed that some of the most active and vocal fans of our boys are of the female persuasion, and I'm very curious to ask what draws you to the Chrolli / Ollian saga. As a gay man, I love being able to see the stories of my community portrayed so well--with some actual passion and playfulness, and without the bloody censorship that plagues queer storylines in North America (and, OK, seeing two beautiful men gettin' frisky on a regular basis is also a powerful draw!). What about you women though? If it's not too impertinent a question, what is it you ladies like about the boys and their story? Rob 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Have you ever enjoyed seeing a love story with a straight couple? It doesn't matter if was real or fictional, but if you have ever rooted for two people to be together would it really matter if they were gay or straight? You could look at it as simply as this, I am a straight women and I love men, so why wouldn't two men being together be doubly attractive to me?I have a follow-up question. However the obvious enjoyment of seeing two men with their shirts off is only part of it, because it is not porn I want to see (of any combination). This is a classic love story using the same elements that have been used for centuries to draw us in. At the core of it is that they are the underdogs. How many love stories are about one pair of the couple being wealthy and the other poor, good looking and plain, a different race or religion. They long for acceptance and we are right there with them wanting desperately to believe that love conquers all. -Lara However the obvious enjoyment of seeing two men with their shirts off is only part of it, because it is not porn I want to see (of any combination). RE: Women's perspectives on Chrolli / Ollian
Apr 8 2008, 1:52 PM EDT Hi Lara! Let me start by saying that I really want to be clear that I do NOT mean for my question to be at all offensive or to suggest that there's anything at all wrong with anyone loving the Oliver and Christian story. I'm genuinely asking out of curiosity, not negativity or judgment. As for your post, what you say about the universal appeal of a good love story makes a lot of sense to me. I've definitely enjoyed many well-told tales of star-crossed lovers who happen to be straight. On the other hand, though, I would have to say that if I compare two love stories, both well-written and acted, one with gay male protagonists and one with a straight couple, for me the gay story blows the straight one out of the water every time, as far as my interest and emotional involvement go. I guess, by my admittedly very idiosyncratic perspective, I want to be able to see my life more clearly in the story somewhere and, in some sense, to be able to project myself into it. I think there's definitely also a political dimension to my preference for gay stories in that while there are literally millions of straight romances available out there, I could probably only find about 20 gay love stories that have ever been filmed. For me, that feels very oppressive, and part of a deliberate, centuries-long effort to silence, exclude, and dehumanize gay men, so when a beautiful gay romance finally comes along, It's that much more powerful. Anyway, thank-you for sharing your take on the story--it's good to know some more about what brings us here together! Rob 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

The personal is political. And while I am not gay, and some standards I could be called a gay activist. I have been supporting friends for 20 years (as the first 18 years of my life no one was out to me), attended fund raisers, written letters and voted with this issue in mind. So I am attracted to this storyline for the some of the same reasons you are. I have been a romance junkie for even more years. I love love stories. As much as I loved West Side Story, I would rather not have my heart broken. So when it comes to gay films I am more willing to see a movie like The Wedding Banquet than Brokeback Mountain. The reason we support this storyline may be made of the exact same elements, but our ratios may be a wee bit different. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Women's perspectives on Chrolli / Ollian
Apr 8 2008, 7:20 PM EDT There are a lot of theories on this who might or might not apply to various extents: Some are: 1) It's has the same draw for females as girl on girl porn has for straight men. Only that many women prefer romance stories to porn, so rather than gay porn they might watch gay romance. 2) One naked boy hot; two naked boys hotter. 3) Exotism. You see straight love stories all the time. Seeing a gay love story is something different and unusual. Piques the interest. 4) Claims that supposedly women have an inherent dislike for rivaling females so they would rather see their object of desire with another men than with a woman they don't like. (personally, I'm not fond of this argument, but hey, this is just a potential list) 5) Possibly insulting the other way around: the romeo&juliet/tragedy aspect. There are about a handful of good obstacles to keep a couple apart and keep them tragic. Some of those aren't very appealing (we think we are siblings; you slepts with a relative of mine; either of us is married and us getting together would be cheating). Others aren't very realistic anymore in this day or time (our families hate each other, my daddy keeps me locked up). Either being gay and persecuted by evil homophobes (or even just a normally un-understanding environment) or gay in love with straight are effective dramatic tools for a love story that feel realistic to straight people. 6.) Freedom from typical man/female gender roles when you watch the relationship. Smaller chance that your inner femminist might perk up and complain about a power dynamic. 6 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

What about you women though? If it's not too impertinent a question, what is it you ladies like about the boys and their story?Hi Rob! I'll try to make some valid points in order to answer your question. I've been watching Forbidden Love for years and I've never seen such a beautifully and profundly portrayed realtionship on the show (despite the fact that there have been same sex relationships ). Watching the Chrolli story unfold made me (as a viewer ) experience love in its pure and organic form , like I've almost never seen it on a soap opera before . Thore and Jo manage to create such great onscreen chemistriy that it's almost mind-boggling. I felt like the characters of Olli and Christian practically "came alive" through the current s/l. In addition to all of this, the story itself is well-conceived, I find the quality of the writing generally good. Furthermore -as you've pointed out - contrary to some North American tv -formats, there are no artistric "restrictions" whatsoever. This is a crucial factor when it comes to the honest and realistic portayal of a relationship. It's imporant for the actors as well. Acting is a form of art that sometimes requires a great deal of liberty! To address your concern regarding straight woman and their fondness for gay relationships: I'm a straight gal. Obviously , I find men attractive and hot. Two guys together is basically twice the hotness!! :-) Hope that answered your question.:-) Maya 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Women's perspectives on Chrolli / Ollian
Apr 9 2008, 12:08 PM EDT Hi! As a straight woman with a slight obsession with gay men, I feel compelled to answer your question :P I first found out about this storyline via After Elton, the American website for all things gay in pop culture, and I'm immensely grateful to whomever is subtitling the story on YouTube so us non-German speakers can watch it! There are several reasons why I'm attracted to this storyline. First off, I'm deeply deeply committed to gay rights and it saddens me that there are so few honest, complex portrayals of gay men and women on American television. People are people, in my opinion, and the gay men and women I know deserve to see people like them on tv and in the movies. And given that these storylines are so rare, it warms my heart to see wonderful, positive portrayals of them anywhere. Second, and this is purely superficial, Thore and Jo are smoking hot (don't tell my boyfriend!) and their love scenes have been amazingly sexy. Of course, the story is really excellent - romantic, well-written and well-acted. Thore and Jo have terrific chemistry. Also, it's different. Straight white couples are kind of old, especially since I'm in one, and I love seeing stories about new and unfamiliar characters and situations. So those are my reasons for loving this couple. Go Ollian! -Sara 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Apr 9 2008, 3:04 PM EDT Thank you to all of you for adding your points of view--it seems that Olli and Christian are just pretty darned incredible any way you look at them! It's also really nice to hear from people who aren't lesbian, gay, or bisexual themselves, but who still have such a strong commitment to human rights--the world needs more people like you! RE: Women's perspectives on Chrolli / Ollian
Apr 10 2008, 1:14 AM EDT I basically agree with what the other ladies of the thread have replied. :) For me, certain gay love stories have always been so passionate and intense, especially when there is a sense of "forbidden love" (lol) because of the denial of your feelings. And there are so many heterosexual relationships that are absolutely I-can't-believe-I'm-following-this-storyline boring. And of course, you have two lovely guys to watch on screen, as said quite a few times in the previous replies. But all of this depends on the people and the relationship, cause there have been gay love stories that are far too seedy to watch or continue watching (as well as heterosexual ones). Anyhoo, I hope that added something extra to this thread. Oh and - I love Ollian! :) -Maxie 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jun 11 2008, 3:11 PM EDT Hi! As a fan of romance and love in general, I just love the story. It seems genuine, unlike so many portrayals in other shows, etc. I like that it is honest and open. I could care less if it were 2 males, 2 females, or a straight couple. It is just beautiful. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 30 2008, 7:46 PM EDT I've just started watching Chrolli/Ollian soap, and it's very interesting story. I'm a straight female and I don't mind watching it. It makes me think that no matter what kind of person you are, you have the right to fall in love. Love is always love...And I don't care if anybody agrees or not, I'd still let them love each other. I can't change my mind now...I'm Christian(very conservative one)...and I'm sure my fellow Christians wouldn't agree as u all know...but after watching brokeback mountain,AWZ(ROman and Dennis) and Chrolli Soap...It changes my perception about Gay Love...and I appreciate very much to Germans to have shown me a new world..the world that I was scared of stepping into it...I love CHROLLI very very very much!I can't wait for the new episode....Have a nice one everyone!!! 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
